Ireland – Retirement Letter

Posted on November 30, 2000

To Human Resources, As of Monday the 4th of December 2000 I am giving four weeks notice to leave WorldPort. I will cease employment on the 31st of December. There are a number of reasons for my decision. Firstly and most importantly is the culture of the company, there is a serious clash between my own way of doing things and the companies. This is difficult to sum up except to say the work culture is far from relaxed, I'm not too sure if this is an American thing or not. Here is an extreme seriousness that surrounds the company, it seems to me there is little realisation that life is a joke and computers are fun toys. It is all summed up in the cliche that the culture here is you live to work not work to live. This is also represented in the idea of doing drug tests which I find very fascistic, it is none of the companies business what I do with my spare time. I realise that this was part of my contract but I was of the understanding that this was some American thing which was not going to be implemented. This entire situation with this culture clash, which is not an Australian/Irish/American thing, but more of personal ideals, has made me uncomfortable and nervous as my various freak outs in meetings have demonstrated. Second is the weather, its very very cold here. Thirdly on a very personal level I have found having to wake up every single morning particularly difficult and depressing, Paul has been accomodating in this respect but it is bound to lead to clashes. Some say this is a fact of life, if this is the case I will avoid life a little longer. On the other hand I have enjoyed the work I have been doing and I enjoy working with Paul and the other developers, he's a good boss and they're a good team. I will make sure by my finishing date that the documentation is all up to scratch. If you can find a replacement before I leave I will fully co-operate in passing over all information regarding the work I have done. I hope by the time I leave the Linux product will be either complete of very close to completion thereby completing the job I started. I would like to thank WorldPort for the opportunity they have given me to expand my skill set and play with some cool toys. Regards, Jesse
